About the NZ Market
An overview of New Zealand
New Zealand is situated in the South Pacific Ocean 1900 km to the east of Australia. With a land area of 268,000 sq km it is similar in size to Japan or Britain. It is comprised of two main adjacent islands, the North Island and South Island, and a number of small outlying islands. New Zealand has a population of just over 4.1 million people. More than one million people live in Auckland in the North Island. The capital city is Wellington, situated at the southern tip of the North Island. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island.
Over half of New Zealand’s total land area is pasture and arable land, and more than a quarter is under forest cover. It is predominantly mountainous and hilly, with 13% of the total area consisting of alpine terrain, including many peaks exceeding 3000 metres. Lakes and rivers cover 1% of the land. The climate is temperate and relatively mild.
NZ Supermarkets are largely represented by two main retailers – Countdown (full service model under Progressive Enterprises Limited, owned by Woolworths Group Australia Pty Ltd) and Foodstuffs, a New Zealand owned co-operative running as 2 separate businesses (Foodstuffs North Island & Foodstuffs South Island) trading as New World (full service), Pak n Save (discount retail) and Four Square/On the Spot (smaller route convenience banner stores). The route & petroleum channels are more fragmented with majority of Petroleum sites part of organised networks (including BP, Z Energy, Mobil and other NZ branded smaller groups). The Route & Petroleum channel is serviced by 3rd party distributors, with head office Petroleum serviced via organised wholesalers
